GrayCat Markdown

A local-first sticky Markdown editor for macOS.

Why I built this

I'm a doctor in a Chinese orthopedic department. Writing is a big part of my day — clinical notes, literature reviews, patient-education drafts, the occasional article for a medical WeChat Official Account. Markdown is how I think: it's fast, portable, and my scribbles don't get locked into any particular vendor's file format.

I tried most of the popular Markdown editors over the years. Each had something I liked and something that got in the way. I wanted a tool that felt like a sticky note on my desktop — always a keystroke away, never demanding I log in, never syncing my drafts to somebody else's server. So I built one.

mdEdit is not designed to replace Typora, Obsidian, or VS Code. It's designed for the moments in between — when you want to jot something down, clean up a snippet, or prepare a piece for a Chinese publishing platform, without the ceremony of a bigger tool.

What it is

Local-first

Zero network requests. No account. No telemetry. Your drafts live on your Mac.

Sticky-note positioning

Always-on-top window, menu-bar presence, global hotkey ⌘ Shift M to surface from any app.

Real clipboard power

Copy with formatting from the preview — paste into Mail, Pages, Lark, Outlook with styles preserved.

Publishing Modes

Four presets (Standard / Zhihu / Toutiao / WeChat) each with a tuned preview and copy strategy, one Markdown source behind them all.

Task-list round-trip

Click a rendered [ ] checkbox and the source Markdown updates in place.

Native macOS

File associations, right-click menus, menu bar, file dialogs — all native. No web-browser shell feel.

Three languages

Interface in 简体中文, English, and 日本語. Switchable on the fly.

Three built-in themes

Paper, Forest, Ink — plus a six-color custom palette for your own preferences.

What it is not

About the developer

Yongtao Mao (茅泳涛). Orthopedic surgeon at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, knee sports medicine subspecialty. Self-taught developer; mdEdit is a solo side project polished over several iterations of my own daily use before being released.

I also make KneeDaily, a daily-literature iOS app for knee-sports-medicine specialists. Same single-developer policy: every Chinese summary is written and reviewed by me personally.
